Saarland University

UniGR student at Saarland University

Saarland University invites students from the partner universities to enrich their studies by taking courses in Saarbrücken. A large part of the course offer is freely accessible for students from the Greater Region. The possibility of taking courses is open to students who would like to follow single courses and/or to take exams, but who do not aim for a degree from Saarland University. Enrolment is free of charge.

Which courses can I attend?

Students can choose the courses that they would like to follow by consulting Saarland University’s online course catalogue.

A large part of the lectures at Saarland University is freely accessible for students from the Greater Region, but not all. The university has issued an overview of all academic programmes according to the access conditions for students from the partner universities:

1.         programmes open to students without consultation of the programme directors

2.         programmes open to students only after the Admissions Office has received the agreement of the programme directors

3.         programmes not accessible for students of the partner universities.

How do I enrol?

Enrolment applications must be submitted via SIM-Portale. There is no enrolment deadline. The winter term starts at the 1st of October and ends on the 31st of march. The summer term starts at the 1st of April and ends on the 30th of September. Please note that you should be enrolled before lectures begin in order to participate in the current semester’s courses.

Necessary documents

To enrol you will need to provide the following documents:

  • Certificate of enrolment from the other universities
  • Higher education qualification (e.g. Abitur certificate)
  • Proof of health insurance cover from a German statutory health insurance provider
  • Passport photo in JPG-format

Re-registration for cross-enrolled students ("Zweithörerschaft")

Re-registration applications must be submitted via the SIM portal.

If your permit for an NC-restricted subject does not cover the following semesters, you will need a new permit for each additional semester. You can find the relevant application to extend your re-registration permit here.

Further information

If you are currently cross-enrolled but you intend to change your status so that in future you are only enrolled at Saarland University, you will need to reapply for admission (if you plan to study a restricted-admission programme) or request a change of student status (in the case of non-restricted entry programmes). Both applications must made in the SIM portal.

You will then need to provide your higher education entrance qualification and proof that you have the required level of language proficiency (e.g. for German, the DSH-2 certificate). Please note that you will not be able to switch from cross-enrolled to solely enrolled status unless you provide (i) a higher education entrance qualification that is appropriate to your intended study programme, and (ii) proof of adequate proficiency in German (as stipulated by the relevant regulations at Saarland University). Students on a restricted-admission study programme who wish to change from cross-enrolled to solely enrolled status must reapply for admission, but no guarantee of acceptance can be given.

What language proficiency do I require?

A sufficient proficiency of the course language is required. Proof of the language proficiency has to be presented on demand.

When does the enrolment period start?

For the winter semester (courses from October to February) students should enrol as visiting students (“Zweithörer”) in the period from beginning of August to end of October. Enrolment for the summer semester (courses from April to July) should be done in the period from beginning of March until mid-April.

How can I take examinations and have my studies officially recognised?

The UniGR recommends you to sign a "Learning Agreement" in advance (see UniGR sample LA, 1,98 MB-PDF-EN) that complies with the requirements of your home university, to ensure that your studies and examination results are recognised. Please note that they are not automatically recognised.

Please contact your programme director to find out how to register and the deadlines for signing up for specific courses and examinations! On the basis of the study record that you will receive upon successful completion of the course(s), the examination office will issue a Transcript of Records to you.

The UniGR does not issue diplomas or certificates. However, it is possible to obtain a Mobility Certificate.

All the administrative procedures (including information about registering for courses and examinations and having your work recognised) are shown in this diagram (0.11 MB-PDF-DE/EN/FR).

What are the enrolment fees? What other costs occur?

Enrolment as a UniGR student is free of charge.

Upon enrolment, the Admissions Office can provide students with information concerning low priced public transport tickets in Saarland. Also the student representation (AStA) can recommend advantageous transport tickets for students.
