Mobility fund Saarland University

What is the UniGR mobility fund? For which purposes can I claim travel allowances?

The UniGR mobility fund aims at supporting short-term mobility between the partner universities of the “University of the Greater Region” confederation. Here are the eligible mobility types:

  • attending lectures
  • participating in conferences, summer schools, workshops, or similar events organized by one of the partner universities OR of the « University of the Greater Region »
  • visiting a university library (please note that visits at libraries can only be considered for three semesters per student)
  • meeting with a (co-)supervisor of your (final) thesis

How much do I get

The amount of the allowance is based on the travel costs for public transport (2nd class, cheapest connection). If you go by car, you will be reimbursed 0.20 Euro per kilometer up to the maximum amount of the costs for public transport.

Refunds are granted up to the amount actually paid. You are welcome to contact us with any questions, especially if the journey time is disproportionate to the price.

Maximum amounts per trip from Saarbrücken or for the return trip to Saarbrücken (as in February 2024):

  • Arlon: 29.10 EUR (via Luxembourg)
  • Kaiserslautern: 19.80 EUR (connecting ticket from/to Homburg + bus ride between Kaiserslautern central station and university)
  • Liège: 67.90 EUR up to 150.00 EUR (DB), 140.20 EUR (“Flexpreis Europa")
  • Luxembourg: The use of public transportation in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is free of charge.
  • Metz: 20.40 EUR up to 22.20 EUR (DB and SNCF)
  • Nancy: as from 27.00 EUR (“Saar-Lorraine-Tarif”), 32.90 EUR (DB and SNCF), 12.99 EUR Flixbus
  • Trier: 26.10 EUR (connecting ticket from/to Saarhölzbach + bus ride between Trier central station and University)

Can I also ask for the reimbursement of semester tickets?

In case you enrol at a partner university in the framework of the UniGR student status and purchase the local semester ticket, the costs can also be reimbursed from the UniGR mobility fund. If you can prove the appropriate number of rides, you will get the full amount, otherwise the relevant portion of the costs. (e.g., If you purchase the semester ticket of the University of Kaiserslautern but can only prove one ride, you will get 16.40 Euros.)

Can I stay overnight?

Liège: For short-time mobility to the University of Liège, overnight stays can be subsidized with up to 20 Euros (upon submission of the receipts).

For the other partner universities, this only applies for stays of several days’ duration.

Exclusion criteria

If you are already supported by another funding source for your travel expenses to the concerned partner universities, you are excluded from this funding scheme. The same rule applies for regular commuters (living in one region and studying in another).
