Students from the Greater Region spent the first week of February 2017 at the University of Liège to learn more about the human-robot cooperation.
Part of the Interreg project “Robotix Academy”, this intensive 1-week-bloc-course gathers each year engineering students enrolled at different universities from the Greater Region and focuses on human-robot cooperation in industrial production. It is conjointly organised by the University of Luxembourg, University of Liège and Saarland University/ZeMA with the active support of the University of the Greater Region.
For the entire week, students stayed in downtown Liège which both facilitated the management of the packed schedule and fostered the interactions between participants from common breakfasts to nights out. While the first days were dedicated to lectures and exercise sessions on topics like robot control, path planning or human-robot cooperation in industry, the evening programme foresaw team building activities as well as company presentations (ABB, Schunk, KUKA) on the latest human-robot cooperation developments. At the end of the week, the students were able to apply the newly acquired theoretical knowledge during project works. In teams of 5 to 6, students could get some hands-on experience on the robots that the participating universities had gathered in Liège for this occasion.
After this week in Belgium, the feedback from both students and professors was highly positive. Students’ reactions ranged from "I would never have imagined myself interested in working in the field of robotics" to "I was astonished by the diversity of the topics presented as well as by the cooperation/exchange opportunities in the Greater Region". In the end, all the participants agreed that Robotix 2017 was a huge success and that a cordial thank should be expressed to all the supporters of the event.
This third Robotix-course in Liège succeeded editions in Luxembourg (2015) and Saarbrücken (2016). A fourth edition with the possible additional support of the Umweltcampus Birkenfeld and the Université de Lorraine is already being discussed.
