What is a "Cotutelle de thèse"?
Cotutelle de thèse is a joint doctorate programme at two universities in different countries, which leads to obtaining a joint doctorate.
How do I prepare a thesis in the context of the Cotutelle programme?
The first step is to either choose a supervisor for your thesis topic at two universities in different countries or use your thesis topic to apply for a post graduate programme. Proposals for thesis topics can mostly be found on the Internet pages of research laboratories and post graduate programmes. If, as second step, the admission to the doctorate at both involved institutions is obtained and both supervisors agree with a Cotutelle de thèse programme, the third step is to conclude an agreement for this individual doctoral project between the two participating universities. Herein, the modalities for the preparation and defence of the doctoral thesis, possible research stays and the financial aspects between the two universities will be defined and set down. In most cases, you have to pay tuition fees only at one university (usually, a rotation takes place between the universities). Please check beforehand with the contact points within your main university.
Under the joint supervision of your two supervisors, you will then write a dissertation and defend it before a joint body.
You will then be awarded a joint degree, for which either a joint certificate from both institutions will be drawn up or one doctoral certificate from each of the involved universities, pointing to the joint "Cotutelle de thèse" programme.
