The project "University of the Greater Region - UniGR" contacted the European University Association (EUA) to evaluate its activities and achievements as well as to formulate recommendations for the missions and structure of the future confederation. The EUA, whose most important mission is the evaluation of universities, accepted to conduct this evaluation of "a new kind" for the association and appointed six outstanding experts under the direction of Mr. Luc Weber (CH), former president of the University of Geneva.
The work began in October 2011 with a first self-evaluation phase. A report was written under the direction of the UniGR project steering group, including the feedback of many involved actors. It was delivered mid-December and served as a basis for the site visits.
MM. Lewis Purser (Irish University Association), Sijbolt Noorda (president of the Association of Universities in the Netherlands) and Luc Weber visited the universities of Luxembourg, Saarland, Trier and Kaiserslautern from Jan 16th to 19th. Mr. Lluis Ferrer (former president of the Association of public universities in Catalonia), Mrs. Andrée Sursock (senior advisor at the EUA) and Mrs. Patricia Pol (Vice-President of the University Paris-Est) then visited the universities of Liège and Lorraine from Jan 24th to 27th.
The experts had the opportunity to meet with top management, academic and administrative staff as well as with PhD candidates and students and left the universities with a good first impression of the project activities.
The next step of the evaluation will consist in a second site visit (conclusive) taking place in Luxembourg from Feb 29th to Mar 2nd and gathering representatives from all universities as well as the whole experts team. This will be the place for discussions about the future of the UniGR confederation. The main recommendations of the EUA will be presented in a dedicated session at the University of Luxembourg on March 2nd from 1.30pm to 3.30 pm (campus Limpertsberg - please contact ugr-info(at)uni.lu for any question).
The final evaluation report is expected for Mid-April and will help the UniGR network to better structure its future organisation.
